How often should you detail your car in San Francisco?

October 2026 · By Max Meier, GoDetailX

Most cars in San Francisco should get a full detail every three to four months and an exterior wash every two to four weeks. Street-parked cars near the ocean or under trees should lean toward the shorter end.

    Fog and salt air

The marine layer settles a fine film of moisture and salt on paint almost every night in the western half of the city. Left alone, that film traps dust and speeds up oxidation on unprotected paint and trim.

    Street parking

Cars parked at the curb collect road grime, brake dust from passing traffic and the occasional bird visit. Bird droppings are acidic and can etch clear coat in days, so a regular wash schedule matters more here than in a garage.

    Trees

Sap and pollen from street trees bond to paint and get harder to remove the longer they sit. If you park under trees, a Paint Decontamination add-on every few details keeps the surface smooth.
